A Branding Showcase 'The City of Melbourne'

..........................................................................................................................................................................
This identity system created by Landor Associates for The City of Melbourne was one of the most inspirational pieces of branding that I saw in 2009. This project clearly shows how to get the best out of an identity. Creative Director Jason Little had considered all aspects of the brand, this is reflected in everything from the colour palette to the different choices of fonts on each piece of advertising. All of the elements sit with in the brand ethos. This approach to branding has had an impact on how I look at a creating a new identity systems, by apply ing a little structure to the identity systems you can get the best out of your design.

This is retro for a new generation. The 1980's have a lot to answer for, bad hair even worse fashion, however the advertising boom started in the 80's and with that came some classic adverts. A selfmadeheroes favorite was the original 1985 "Re-Record, not fade away" Scotch Skeleton ad. Feast your eyes on this and check out the 80s inspired illustrations belwo (Artist Unknown).

The return of brand beckham

..............................................................................................................................................................................
Never before has an opposing player been met with such admiration. I believe that this is partly down to the 'David Beckham' the player but mainly down to 'David Beckham' the brand. The Beckham brand has been carefully and cleverly created over the past 8 years into a massive global icon with products ranging from fashion labels to mens performs and even the odd Football boot. Very few sports people have achieved such great status; namely 'Michael Jodan' or 'Tiger Woods' (pre-afair). Creating the wright brand images is key to a successful after life in Football. 'David Beckham' has manage to combined an excellent football career with good looks to create an appealing brand. Men want to be him and women want to be with him. 'David Beckhams' key brand values of style, belief, pride, power, leadership, skill, and integrity are all attributes that any major business want to be associated with. To create a brand with such a wide following in such a short space of time has to be admired.

SS10 has finally arrived and selfmadeheroes are celebrating by giving you a pinic of visuals treats!. Paul Smith Jeans are leading the way this spring / summer with there awesome use of colour. "Anderson’s ( A film director that has inspired the SS10 collection) use of colour remains central to the collection. Pinks, oranges and yellows reflect the Indian inspiration, whilst blues, soft greens and purples create a darker summer palette. Pale yellow and lime green add softness to the collection." Return of Retro Design

..............................................................................................................................................................................
For graphic designers and typographers vintage ads are more than just eye candy. Posters and advertisements from specific time periods tell us quite a lot about fashions and trends. Isn't it strange how styles, fashions and design elements always seems to come back around. Check out some these 'Retro' graphics, from the original 1970's 'Grattan' Catalogue to some more modern takes on the past.
